Today principals received a letter from Chair, Patrick Garnett, and Chief Executive Officer, Allan Blagaich, of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. The letter clarifies the minimum provision of Pre-primary to Year 10 Languages in Western Australia and a timeline for implementation.
A copy of the letter and list of FAQ's can be accessed via the School and Curriculum Standards Authority website.
The letter states specific years where Languages will be made compulsory and by when. Whilst this is a minimal position, the statement “where possible schools should provide Languages education from pre-primary to Year 10” affirms the important role language learning plays in developing literacy and language awareness, intercultural capability and communication skills. It is important to note that nearly all Independent schools already deliver comprehensive Languages programs in these years and we encourage our schools to continue to offer programs beyond the minimum.
